Recorded at Sierra Studios in Athens, Greece, the twelve-track album entangles themes of astronomy, philosophy and Greek mythology against a backdrop of refined Balkan-French folk-inspired compositions and arrangements featuring French and English lyrics.

An album perfectly suited to humanity’s current state of turmoil, The Birth & Death of Stars draws on the skills of some of Australia’s most uniquely diverse musicians and songwriters to lead the listener on a wonderful voyage through the ether, exploring what links us to each other and the world around us while poetically contemplating humanity’s place in the universe.

Tracks such as the grand energic multi-layered masterpiece Stardust musically capture the delight in the fleeting moments of connection, the intrepid empowerment of greater human connectivity.

Lucifer, sung entirely in French and bolsters MZAZA’s Balkan-French folk genre predecessors while exploring institutional hierarchies of power and their capacity to enable oppression.

The album’s title track, award-nominated The Birth and Death of Stars, is an intricate and moving ode to singer Pauline Maudy’s grandmother and her experience of being stuck in a body that is no longer meant for this life, a personal and tasteful touch on the rarely broached topics of voluntary assisted dying, mortality and human control over life and death.

More than an album the conceptual collection of songs, linked by a thematically rich exploration of humanity in our contemporary world, is accompanied by a theatre show developed in collaboration with acclaimed director Benjamin Knapton (Circa). This body of work is tied together by striking visual aesthetics contributed by Finnish collage animator Laura Matikainen (who is responsible for MZAZA’s Stardust music video) and Brisbane artist Emily Devers (who created the album art).

MZAZA’s 2011 album Journey Over Skin celebrated the ensemble’s collaboration with acclaimed flamenco guitarist Andrew Veivers and presents a collection of moving tracks showcasing MZAZA’s unique way of adapting traditional songs and their ability to transport the listener to distant shores. The album also features the talents of double bassist Sam Pankhurst on double bass (Australian Art Orchestra) and ud player Tim Johannessen.  Tracks Le Temps qui Passe and Les Fleurs Qui Fanent were both highly commended in the Queensland Music Awards (2011).

MZAZA’s second studio album Ghosts, released in 2015, has attracted accolades from critics and peers alike, receiving the Queensland Music Award for best song in both 2015 and 2016 and being showcased at festivals internationally. Mixed by ARIA-nominated engineer Robin Mai and featuring a collection of talented musical collaborators, Ghosts spent three weeks in the AMRAP Metro Charts, was feature album on Melbourne’s PBS and spent five weeks in 4ZZZ’s top 20.

With much of the original material in French or English and inspired by Balkan music, Ghosts delves into stories of ancestors and migratory pasts. The impressive musicianship of MZAZA – realised with accordion, violin, percussion, double bass and Flamenco guitar – delivers a dynamic and intense live show that is sure to make listeners be transported to another time and place.
